Happy Jamie’s Birthday Everyone!

Wednesday FLEW by… and we are ready to tell you ALL about it! But before we get to that- we have a guest writer!

A Day In The Life:

Hi! My name is Schuyler and this is my first summer at Ashmere. Briefly my story is I was on a Yale fellowship in Peru when we took a vacation to Colombia, a boulder fell on me which gave me a traumatic brain injury which affected my balance and left me in a wheelchair for now. So camp is in the beautiful Berkshires. There are about 10 girls in my cabin. We have different activities every day like we did yoga yesterday and today (with support there to help every time we went on our knees or anything) and we had classes in the morning like improv, writing, dance, and sports. Yesterday we had Challenge Night where anyone can challenge anyone to anything from staring to a poetry slam to drinking water to wrestling. Friday night we’re hosting this wedding for 2 people who met at camp! We have to wake up at 730 and breakfast at 8 and we have lunch around 1 and dinner around 6 with morning and afternoon activities in between breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Each night there’s a different activity like campfire and challenge night. We have lake time where you can either hang out on the beach, swim in rafts, go out on a canoe or a paddle-board! Sometimes we go into town or go to a music concert or something. Today was Jamie’s birthday so we had cakes and crowns and cupcake glasses and everything. We had music class where we sang/learned the songs for the play- Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. We take a lot of cool field trips, like tonight we went to Jacob’s Pillow, a famous modern dance company. We saw the debut of this authentic African dance company. They even had an audience participation part where the audience could get up and dance and a question and answer session.

As Schuyler said, we woke up, ate breakfast, stretched/moved our bodies with some outside yoga and sang our hearts out!

Today was a very important Official Ashmere Project Holiday…. Jamie’s Birthday!!!

After lunch we had some time at the lake, and a rest period before loading up the vans to Jacob’s Pillow to see the most incredible performance by the Kankouran West African Dance Company. They even let us dance with them!

Thanks to Jacob’s Pillow for having us! And shoutout to Angela for setting us up with our group tickets and Vinny the accessibility coordinator for driving us around and helping us get our dinner set up!

After the show, a small group headed out for a birthday celebration for Jamie! Cheers to 24!
